Scar Revisions

What are Scar Revisions?

Scar revision is a common cosmetic procedure designed to reduce the visibility of scar tissue by altering its appearance. Frequently used on stretch marks, surgical scars, and acne scars, scar revision surgery involves the removal of damaged skin layers and joining of healthy skin that surrounded the original scar. Although no scar can be completely removed, scar revision surgery is a great way to minimal a scar’s appearance while enhancing natural skin tone and texture.

Procedure Overview

Facial scars are highly individualistic, and recommended treatment options are dependent on a number of variables, including scar location, depth of scar tissue, and time of scar development. Based on the extent of scaring, your surgeon may recommend a combination of treatments to achieve optimal cosmetic results, including topical gels, compression tape, dermabrasion, or laser therapy. Most facial scar surgical procedures require minimal local anesthetics, but the option of intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is available for more complex cases.

Sutures are typically removed within 2-3 days following facial scar revision surgery, and patients can expect to experience redness, swelling, bruising, and low levels of discomfort. Post-operative care is important for the recovery of the skin. Patients are advised to keep their head elevated when laying down, use cold compress to reduce swelling, and decrease their involvement in activities that would put any undue stress on the areas where incisions were made.

Are Scar Revisions right for you?

If you are considering scar removal or facial scar revision surgery, it’s important to understand that your scar cannot be removed completely. The goal of the treatment is to improve the visual appearance of the scar and surrounding skin. If scars have reduced the mobility of your mouth or eyes, scar revision treatment is a great way to restore function to the various parts of your face.
